Having had a few emails from people who aren’t in the UK and want to consult with me, I’ve now decided to exclusively offer distance fat-loss coaching via Skype or phone! Read on…
Since I’ve wound down my in-person Personal Training I’ve had the idea to offer fat loss coaching remotely, and now Three Coaching has transformed into a service that offers just that.
Over the course of my Personal Trainer career I have come to favour the approach of the consultant rather than training people in the gym. This is because I know the effective ways to train people to get results but also know how the majority of clients want to train and there is a disparity there.
I used to shake my head at a few Personal Trainers I worked with because they didn’t measure their client’s body fat and hardly did any compound exercises with their clients. But their clients didn’t aim for results on the whole, they aimed for appeasing their guilt because of the lifestyle they led which involved a poor diet overall. I know this because I too had (and lost, due to calling them on it) such clients, plus myself and the other Personal Trainers used to swap notes and adecdotes on ‘client culture’. It’s surprising how consistent client-psychology is.
I always knew that the root of most of these problems lay in personal attitudes, emotional well-being as well as food education. There really has to be an on-going education and check-in concerning these factors and racing through client after client on the gym floor rarely affords such ‘space’ for contemplation.
Also, people never did any goal setting, nor did they seem to feel any desire for it. But motivation is a huge deal in this game.
The solution – a Fat Loss Skype Coaching service
As I mentioned above, I got a few requests for Skype consulting and gave a few consultations this way. As I got requests for local Personal Trainer work that I had to turn down due to other commitments, I would try to offer Skype or phone consultations as a secondary option but that took people off guard as they had no experience of such a thing and really just wanted in-person motivational style training.
So I decided to transform the whole of Three Coaching into an online Fat Loss Skype Coaching service so we could get more talking done and set it up from the get go – we’re going to talk goals and motivation and diet plans.
We can also talk about training methods of course but obviously I can’t train someone that way via the internet or Skype, I can only advise on what kinds of things work and mention a few pointers regarding technique.
Self motivation is ten times more valuable than any trainer
I often felt odd seeing someone every week, taking their money and putting them through a chest and shoulder workout.
“So, I saw you two weeks ago and I taught you how to work out chest and shoulders. Today is chest and shoulders again, can you tell me what you did for chest and shoulders last week in my absence?”
“Oh I didn’t go near that bloody free-weights section, I can’t remember what you taught me, I think I did twenty of the… pully one? (me: no, I told you that doesn’t do chest or shoulders). Well, I just let you point me in the direction and do what you say on the day.”
“… and what about when I’m not there?”
“I just do a bit of everything really.” (client goes on to explain the exact same workout they did before having had 6 or so hours of tuition in workout theory and technique).
Sigh. This was pretty common.
Of course I told them to bring a note pad but they couldn’t really be bothered with this. And this is an example of how coaching works – if you have a goal, and you acknowledge that a notepad would definitely help, you’ll be called on it if you fail to employ such a basic aid to goal-fulfillment.
Accountability is awesome.
Life Coaching provides you with the key!
With Fat Loss Skype Coaching you define goals and sub-tasks that you must complete each week and your motivation is kept in check – you’re accountable for getting stuff done.
There is little such motivation in traditional Personal Training sessions. If anything, it can be good for business as the client just keeps on buying sessions because they become dependant on the trainer.
Maybe your training is ok and you need a diet tweak?
That’s ok too. Burning fat can be a very tricky process. You have to count a lot of calories and eat the best ones for you but also figure out ways of eating that can give you some satisfaction.
I’m pretty creative when it comes to snacks that minimise ‘damage’, so you can eat the tasty stuff with a clear conscience.
There’s a ton of ways to eat cakey things that have a healthy glycemic index and digest nice and slowly so as to avoid sugary insulin spikes.
I hope this new direction inspires a few people to get in touch and make use of some education and motivation training when it comes to fat loss.
There’s a lot to learn in the fat loss world and I hope I can help steer people in the right direction so they can avoid giving up or wasting months or years on the wrong methods!
